Before Getting Certified
Before attending any workshop to get certified, students must complete the following:
1a. Complete the General Certification
Once you sign up for a workshop, the Equipment Managers will email you a link to the general workshop slideshow. This certification is completely online and will take about 30 minutes. This workshop covers general information about checking out equipment and certifications. There is a quiz at the end of the slideshow that can be taken as many times as needed. Please keep in mind that students need a 100% to be considered certified. Please be sure to do this BEFORE attending any workshops. When you sign up for a workshop, the link to the general certification will be attached to the workshop event invite on google calendar and email. The general certification lasts for the remainder of the school year and will need to be retaken between academic school years. If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at sctvequipment@gmail.com.

1b. Attend SCTV Orientation
If you're in a print organization, skip this step! If you're in an SCTV student media organization (Film Production Coalition or On the Spot), you are required to attend SCTV orientation. The orientation takes place at the Student Media Press Center and is typically hosted in the first few weeks of every quarter by the Broadcast Coordinator. Times are typically announced via email or Instagram. If you're participating in a production group, your producers should inform you of the specific times for that quarter and how to sign up. If you can't make the orientation times, please reach out to the broadcast coordinator about scheduling a 1-on-1. The orientation lasts for the remainder of the school year and will need to be redone between academic school years.

Quizzes and Certification Slides
Equipment Workshops
Certifications allow students to check out and/or handle Student Media equipment when working with student media organizations. Certifications are completed by attending workshops. We offer 5 variations: BlackMagic, Canon, Camera Support, Audio, and Lighting. If you have an on-set role in a student media production that requires you to handle equipment, you are REQUIRED to get certified in that scope. If you are a key grip and need to reserve equipment, you will need to be certified in everything you're reserving, as the checkout will be under your name. Please refer to your producers if you are unsure about who needs to check out equipment. Keep in mind, if you aren't responsible for checking out equipment, but plan on handling it, you are required to get certified.
To get certified, sign up for our workshops through our Google Form. If you're participating in a production group, your producers should share the sign-up information. Sign-ups are typically sent out via email or Instagram as well. Workshops are hosted at the Student Media Press Center by the Equipment Managers. They typically take place during the weekends of weeks two and three and take about two hours. Once you sign up, you'll receive a Google Calendar invite with the link to the general certification that needs to be completed prior to attending. Our workshops are capped at around 25 people, and we will close sign-ups once they're full. If you sign up for a workshop, but can't make it anymore, please communicate this to us via our email, sctvequipment@gmail.com, so that we can offer the spot to other students. If you have scheduling issues, please email us to schedule a 1-on-1. Pease keep in mind that we do NOT guarantee we can get you certified before participating in filming. We recommend that you reach out as soon as possible, but at least ONE WEEK before you need to handle equipment.

Recertification
In order to get recertified, you need to attend the workshop at least once in person. You cannot get recertified if you were never initially certified and have never attended an equipment workshop in person. Certifications last for the remainder of the school year and need to be renewed between academic school years. The recertification process does not require attending any in-person training. We only require that you retake the workshop quizzes and get 100%. The quizzes are linked on the recertification slides along with all the instructions. Once you have completed this, you will need to fill out the recertification form and notify us via the equipment manager email.

Student Media Equipment Use Guidelines
To check out our equipment, you must be using it for a Student Media project and reserve equipment at least 2 days before your checkout time. You may only check out equipment for which you are certified in. Equipment cannot be taken off campus and must be kept on campus for the duration of your checkout. When you are checking in or out equipment, it must be within Equipment Manager office hours. Times to check-in and check-out equipment is made when reserving equipment on EZOffice, but if you feel you will need to reschedule these times, please email us beforehand. Once the equipment is returned to the Press Center, the Equipment Managers will inspect the equipment to ensure nothing is lost or broken while in your possession.
